Welcome to the New Navdy Blog

It was back on October 25, 2016, that we shipped the first Navdy. After years of development, tweaks, more tweaks, and refinements we finally released the world's first augmented driving device, a product that connects your smartphone to your car in a revolutionary new way.

It's been a wild ride, and yet in many ways, our journey is just beginning. To mark the occasion, today we're unveiling our new Navdy blog, a place to keep you abreast of everything we're working on, as well as tips to get the best out of your Navdy, a glimpse into the future, and other great stories encompassing the world of driving.

For those of you that are not yet familiar with Navdy, here's what you need to know:

On the surface, Navdy may appear like a traditional head-up display (HUD), but in reality, it's so much more. The similarity ends at the fact both project information into the driver's line of sight, helping you stay focused on the road ahead.

Where Navdy differs is its aim to solve one of the biggest problems we face every day—the temptation to pick up our phone while driving. Despite doing so being illegal in 14 states (including most recently in California), and texting while driving being illegal in 46, the National Safety Council attributes more than a million crashes a year to drivers on cell phones. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention reports distracted driving plays a role in crashes that kill eight and injure another 1,200 people each and every day.

The laws created to get motorists to put down their phones have done little to curb the issue. Spend five minutes on most U.S. highways and you'll see a slew of drivers staring dangerously at their devices. As a society, staying connected has become imperative, and people are willing to risk their lives (and the lives of others), as well as ignore the law, to take calls, check emails, text, and browse social media.

It's a huge problem, especially in the United States where our roads are statistically some of the most unsafe of all major developed nations. Navdy makes using your phone while driving not just possible, but safer—eliminating the need to ever take your eyes off the road or your hands off the wheel.

You can read in detail about how our augmented driving device works, but here's the gist: The Navdy display projects all the information you need as a transparent image over the road ahead. Maps, directions and traffic updates—powered by Google Maps—naturally appear in your line of sight, as if they're floating on the road in front. Navdy can display and read aloud text messages, emails and notifications from your favorite apps like Twitter, Facebook or WhatsApp, and you can respond via Siri or Google Now. If someone calls, you can choose to answer or ignore simply with a wave of your hand, thanks to Navdy's natural gesture control technology. And music from your favorite apps can be managed via a steering wheel-mounted dial.

Combining cutting edge technology to fix a problem that so desperately needs fixing has clearly resonated. We had $7 million dollars in pre-order sales, and to date, over ten million miles have been driven using Navdy—that's a staggering 345 times around the world.

But the Navdy device isn't a finished product. We're shipping new software updates over the cloud all the time, listening to user feedback, and making the driving experience even better. And yet we’re merely on the first step of the ladder to truly realizing the potential of augmented reality technology as it relates to our daily commutes. At Navdy, we dream big. Very big, in fact.

So get excited for things to come: And continue to Look Forward.
