Ask Navdy to "compose new tweet", "write new text" or "call mom" using the voice commands you're already familiar with - Google Now or Siri.
Frequently Asked Questions
Navdy is designed to give you relevant information at a glance and the power to respond to that information with voice and touch-less gesture controls. Its core features include:
Navdy’s HUD was designed by our team of industry -leading optical engineers. Navdy projects a transparent image into the driver’s field of view which appears to float outside of the windshield. The image is focused into the distance so the road stays in focus while the driver views the information presented by Navdy. This, combined with touch less gesture control, means that the driver is able to use Navdy without ever taking their eyes off the road.
Built-in noise cancellation ensures that voice input is clear and the results are consistent. Navdy works with the voice recognition systems you are already familiar with on your phone, like Siri and Google Now.
When you get a notification on Navdy it will appear to the side of the display. If you choose to respond to the notification, you’ll enter a split-screen mode. This allows you to get information from your car and phone without losing sight of critical information like navigation. You’ll be able to adjust this behavior in the settings to limit what information appears and what appears when the car is stationary vs moving.
Navdy supports Google Maps turn by turn directions, any notification appearing on your phone (such as Text Messages, Calendar alerts, WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, etc), Call control, Google Now, Siri, and most music player apps including Spotify, Pandora, iTunes and Google as well as information from your car such as RPM, Miles to Empty, Fuel Economy, Tire Pressure Warning, etc. Our in-house developers will create more apps before the units ship. Everyone who pre-ordered Navdy will have a say in the kinds of apps we build.
Navdy comes with a flexible mount that can be adjusted to conform to the shape of your dash. The portable “friction mount” features a non-skid silicone bottom that is specifically designed to NOT leave marks on your dashboard. If you decide to remove the mount, it will leave no permanent marks. While driving the device will stay firmly mounted.
Navdy is powered by your car’s on-board diagnostics (OBD II) port, but that’s also how it communicates with your car! The OBD II port can output information like your car’s speed, RPM, mileage, fuel, check engine status, etc. Navdy is developing multiple “dashboards” that display your car’s internal statistics in real time. You can choose different dashboards that prioritize speed, fuel economy, or maintenance, so that the information that is the most important to you is available at all times. Your driving experience will no longer be limited by the manufacturer’s preferences!
Navdy connects to your phone using bluetooth and wifi.
From time to time, the Navdy iOS and Android apps will be updated automatically. Updates will also trigger an update to the device’s firmware to add new features and new apps.
We’re running a 30 day pre-order campaign to gauge interest from early adopters and sell them the first batch of Navdy devices at our lowest possible price (a $200 savings). Early adopters will receive email updates about our progress and occasional surveys about features and options that they want to see in the final product. We also have a referral program that could allow you to get Navdy for free.
Your credit card will be charged immediately. Once the units have been produced, they will be shipped to our backers. We currently plan to ship in 2015. Backers will be kept in the loop during the production process and our timetable will get more accurate as we move forward.
Yes. We will ship Navdy to anywhere in the world, but orders outside the US are subject to an additional $10 shipping fee.
The image is focused into the distance so the road stays in focus while the driver views the information presented by Navdy. The same technology is used in all commercial airplanes so the pilot can keep their eyes on the runway while landing the airplane.
We think you will love Navdy. But you can cancel the order and get a full refund within 60 days from the day you placed the order.
The product is likely to change before its release as we consider input from backers and continue to develop the technology. The product may be different from your expectations when it arrives. You will have a 30 day evaluation period where you may return the product if you find it's final form unsatisfactory. If you choose to return the product, you will be responsible for shipping fees.
Please remember that our working prototype’s tech specs are subject to change as we continue to develop the product.
Navdy has no buttons, other than the power button. While you’re driving you’ll be able to control Navdy entirely with voice and touch-less gesture controls. Configuration (such as adjusting preferences or installing new apps) is done through your smartphone between trips.
Navdy supports a standardized set of touch-less gesture commands - swipe left, swipe right, and thumbs up. With these few commands you can answer phone calls, end calls, control music, and so on. These simple gestures can be learned quickly and performed safely while driving.
Any app that supports bluetooth can be controlled by Navdy (including Pandora, Spotify, iTunes and Google Music). Music apps can be controlled with gestures that will pause, play, stop, skip, and repeat songs. The music can be sent to your car’s sound system through Navdy’s bluetooth connection or it’s audio-out jack which can be connected to your car’s audio-in jack.
We are currently developing all Navdy apps in-house. We plan to open up development to partners in the future, but we’re focusing on ensuring stability and compatibility with the core feature set first. If you are interested in developing for Navdy, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Navdy plugs into your car’s on-board diagnostics (OBD II) port. OBD II ports have been built into every car sold in America since 1996. Even if you’ve never seen yours, it’s definitely there! Usually it’s below the steering wheel just to the left.
The OBD II port is NOT the same as the cigarette lighter - you can still use the cigarette lighter to charge your phone while the OBD II port powers Navdy. While Navdy has a built-in battery it is only used to start the device faster. You will not need to worry about battery life - as long as your car has power Navdy will too. We will offer an optional accessory for cars without OBD II ports that will allow you to power your Navdy through your cigarette lighter.
Navdy can be mounted on most car dashboards and its adjustable foot can compensate for most different dashboard shapes and heights. The foot is 6.9" wide and 6.3" deep, so you'll need a space that's at least that big on your dashboard. It’s possible that the shape of your car’s dash may prevent the placement of Navdy directly in front of the driver. In that case, Navdy will have to be placed closer to the mid-point of the dashboard. Some states may also have legal restrictions regarding where accessories may be mounted on the dashboard. Please check your local laws before purchasing Navdy.
The Navdy app will be compatible with both iOS and Android devices. This means that Navdy works with most Android phones, all iPhones, and any iPads with 3G, 4G, or LTE service.
No! Navdy does not require a subscription fee. We use cellular network data through your phone.
When you buy Navdy, you’ll get your own referral link. Any time someone buys a Navdy through that link, you’ll get $30 back. You can earn $30 back up to 10 times. This means that if you refer 10 friends and they buy then your Navdy is free! Some rules and restrictions apply.
Yes! Navdy will work anywhere that a smartphone would work, all you need is a data plan and a signal. Currently Navdy is only offered in English and will not be localized for international orders.
Between 2010 and 2013 alone there were over 4 million new cars sold with a Head-Up Display.
Please check your local regulations and configure Navdy appropriately, it is your responsibility to use Navdy in a way that complies with applicable laws. Local regulations vary on the legality of hands-free texting performed without touching your phone and/or texting in a way that does not divert visual attention from the road. By default Navdy is configured so that text messages appear while the vehicle is stationary and are read aloud while the car is moving. You can also disable text messages completely and there are parental controls to keep teenagers safer.
